Verify a Solar Installer in Zimbabwe Before You Pay | FireFlies

Buying solar in Zimbabwe is one of the biggest purchases a household or business will make this year and the installer you choose matters as much as the panels. A good installer sizes your system correctly, wires it safely, and stands behind the work. A bad one takes a deposit, disappears, or leaves you with an unsafe roof and equipment that never performs as promised.

Before you pay anyone a deposit, run through the checks below. They take an afternoon and can save you thousands.

1. Confirm the business is real and registered

Ask for the company's registration details and check that the business actually exists not just a phone number and a Facebook page. A legitimate installer will happily share:

A registered company name and registration number
A physical address you can visit
Tax clearance details, if you're a business buyer

If someone refuses to put their business details in writing, treat that as your first red flag.

2. Check licensing and compliance

Solar and electrical work in Zimbabwe falls under the Zimbabwe Energy Regulatory Authority (ZERA). Ask whether the installer and their electricians are appropriately licensed for the work, and ask to see proof. Grid-tied systems in particular must meet wiring and safety standards — an unlicensed job can void your insurance and endanger your home.

3. Ask for recent references — and actually call them

Any installer worth hiring has recent customers. Ask for two or three installations completed in the last year, ideally near you, and call them. Ask the questions that matter:

Did the system perform the way it was promised?
Was the quote honoured, or did the costs creep up?
Did they come back when something went wrong?

4. Read the quote like a contract

A serious quote is itemised. It should name the exact panels, inverter and batteries — brand, model and rating — not just "5kW system." Vague quotes hide cheap substitutions. Make sure the quote also spells out:

The total price and the payment schedule
What the warranty covers, and for how long
Who is responsible if something fails after installation

5. Watch for the red flags

Pressure to pay the full amount upfront, in cash
A price far below every other quote (someone is cutting a corner)
No written warranty
No physical address or registration details
Reluctance to name the exact equipment
